A software engineer from Hyderabad was set ablaze and murdered by his in-laws on Monday night. The crime that took place at a village in Jagtial, was a planned one and the local police have arrested all the accused.
Case:
Pawan Kumar (victim husband) was a resident of Alwal and employed as a techie in Bengaluru. On Monday night, he was tied to a chair and burnt alive by his wife and in-laws. The wife’s family were suspicious of him to have killed his brother-in-law by performing black magic.
Following a complaint by Pawan’s family, the cops on Tuesday arrested six members of victim’s wife’s family. Pawan’s 40-year-old wife Krishnaveni was also arrested for her alleged role in the act. According to the woman, her sister-in-law Raparthi Sumalatha (brother’s wife) was the mastermind in the murder of her husband.

Police investigation revealed that Pawan’s in-laws decided to kill him, after they were convinced that he had performed black magic on his brother-in-law Jagan, who died of a heart attack 12-days ago.
An FIR has been registered against all accused identified as Krishnaveni, Sumalatha, Vijay, Premeela, Ramadevi Swaroopa and Gangabhavani – and Uppu Niranjan Reddy (all from wife’s family).
Police Statement
Kishore, Circle Inspector of Malayala police station said that this was not a mere incident of revenge but a planned murder. Explaining further, he clarified that the wife’s family had asked Pawan to come to Balwantpur village and subsequently took him to a room at Manjunatha ashram where the family was staying.
Later in the evening at around 6.30pm, the accused tied Pawan to a chair and poured some petrol over him to set him on fire.
Kumar’s father Racharla Gangadhar filed a complaint against the family, after which the cops registered an FIR. The accused were arrested and have been sent to judicial remand.

In the initial investigation, it was learnt that Vijay and Niranjan had gone to a petrol pump to buy fuel which was used to torch Pawan. This has been captured in CCTV camera. Parents of Pawan also provided us information about family disputes and raised suspicions about Krishanveni’s role.
Wife’s Statement To Media Before Arrest
In her media statement on the night of her husband’s death, Krishnaveni talked to some reporters and blamed her sister-in-law solely responsible for Pawan’s murder. She informed them that her elder brother Jagan had died of a heart attack 12-days ago and thus she came to Balwantpur and stayed back there itself. She then quoted:
I asked my husband not to come to the village as I feared he would be attacked. For the last several days, I was tortured and abused by Sumalatha who thinks my husband was behind Jagan’s death by getting black magic performed on him.

Continuing further, she then said,
I was asked to go out and fetch water. When I heard cries for help, I rushed and saw flames and smoke billowing out of the room. I shouted for help and then I fell unconscious.
According to Krishnaveni, Pawan had got into a dispute with Jagan and had given him some advice, which Sumalatha did not like. She also said,
My sister-in-law kept this in mind and waited to seek revenge. Though my brother had died of a health issue, she held my husband responsible for his death and set him ablaze.
